Persistent Heartburn: Get Relief Now!

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

If you regularly suffer from heartburn, you know that there is not much worse in life than the pain of an acute attack. Perhaps you have paid your druggist a visit in search of help or you have seen your doctor, yet you still suffer intermittent attacks. What more can you do to get relief? Overhaul your diet! You may not need to make extreme changes in what you eat, but you must be attentive to which types of foods can trigger an attack. The following list underscores which foods may trigger an attack:

Beverages: Beer, colas, and nonalcoholic wines are some causes of heartburn.

Dairy: Yogurt, frozen yogurt, milk, certain types of cheeses, and cottage cheese.

Fats and Oils: Ketchup, especially spicy ketchup.

Fruit: Many berries can cause problems including blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, and strawberries. Other triggers include: orange juice, peaches, grapes, and apple juice/cider. For orange juice lovers you can still drink your favorite beverage, but select low-acid orange juice when visiting your grocer.

Grains: Garlic bread, granola cereal, and many types of muffins may cause an attack.

Meat: Beef, fish, tuna, ham, hot dogs, egg, and chicken salad can cause heartburn. For some folks chicken by itself is just fine, but added ingredients such as mayonnaise can cause heartburn.

Sweets and Desserts: Low fat cookies. You may save on calories when eating low fat cookies, but the artificial ingredients contained within them can set off heartburn.

Vegetables: The big triggers in this category are onions, leeks, garlic, scallions, and sauerkraut.

Besides avoiding certain types of foods, there are medications that can stop heartburn including Nexium and Prevacid. Alternatively, some heartburn sufferers have found relief through natural remedies such as Acidgone.

By drinking plenty of water throughout the day, some heartburn sufferers have found relief. In addition, avoid excessive use of caffeinated products, alcohol, and nicotine. Finally, by selecting smaller food portions and eating less you can thwart future attacks.

You don’t need to be held hostage by heartburn;

How to Stop Heartburn from Overcoming You – 7 Things You Need to Know

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

If you’re a heartburn sufferer, the best way to overcome its effect is to learn more about it. You may think that it is just a simple case of indigestion manifested by a burning pain in the chest, often mistaken for a heart attack.

For one, you cannot just let this type of disease go on without proper treatment, because this is a reflux disorder that can lead to complications including cancer. Knowing how to stop heartburn or GERD is also about gathering information on what foods to avoid and what aspects of your lifestyle to correct.

If you know what induces the lower esophageal sphincter or LES, to become inefficient in sealing the entry points of the esophagus, you can prevent the disease from recurring. In fact, the linings of the esophagus can be damaged if this medical problem persists.

You should also have an awareness that heartburn may crop up if one has hiatal hernia, poor eating habits, incorrect sleeping habits, unhealthy lifestyle, is overweight, taking drugs for other medical conditions, or pregnant.

Below are the instances on how these diseases or conditions can lead to heartburn:

1. Hiatal hernia – or hiatus hernia arises when the upper portion of the stomach protrudes to the thorax caused by a tear in the diaphragm. In this case, it will be easier for the acid of the stomach to reflux into the esophagus.

2. Pregnant – GERD in pregnant women usually happens during the later part of pregnancy. Their digestive systems develop difficulty in digesting food intakes. Hence, large meals, citrus fruits, spicy and fatty foods; and any activity after each meal should be avoided while pregnant.

3. Overweight – Obesity can increase the pressure in the abdomen resulting to the upward push of stomach contents including acid into the esophagus.

4. Poor eating habits – Regularly missing meals causes acid build up in the stomach that can disrupt the digestion processes.

5. Unhealthy lifestyle – Cigarette smoking weakens the LES and drinking alcohol beverages is akin to filling up your stomach with acid.

6. Drugs for other medical conditions – These include drugs for high blood pressure, abnormal menstrual bleeding, sea sickness, asthma, antidepressants, Parkinson’s disease, insomnia or heart disease.

7. Incorrect sleeping habits and postures – If you lie down after eating, the tendency is for the stomach contents to press harder on the LES. You should wait for at least 2 hours to pass after eating and before lying down.

Arming yourself with adequate knowledge on how to stop heartburn can help you overcome this disease before it leads to a condition that can overcome you.

How Can Fish Oil Remove Cholesterol Problems?

Monday, July 20th, 2009

How can fish oil remove cholesterol problems? This article will answer that question along with what is good and bad cholesterol? What is the best health approach?

Dietary & Lifestyle Changes

One of the first recommendations that most doctors make is to reduce your intake of foods high in cholesterol. But, you need to be aware that the food you eat is only responsible for about 20% of the cholesterols circulating in your bloodstream. The rest is produced by the liver.

In addition, some cholesterol-containing foods are worse for your health than others. For example, beef, veal and pork contain larger amounts than other foods. Eggs get a bad name. An egg yolk contains less than one third of the amount found in an equivalent serving of beef or veal.

Oily fish contain some, too. The idea of removing cholesterol problems with fish oil makes sense only to people that understand the difference between good (HDL) and bad (LDL) cholesterols. Total cholesterol-count is not as important as the level of good versus bad.

In addition to reducing your intake of beef, veal and pork, losing weight, quitting smoking and decreasing alcohol intake are recommended.

Nutritional Supplementation

The nutrients that are recommended are those that are known to increased HDL levels and help lower total triglyceride levels. They do that by reducing the amount produced by the liver, reducing absorption from foods, dissolving LDL particles, increasing the secretion of bile or reducing the oxidation of LDL particles.

Some of the nutrients that have proven to be effective in clinical studies include policosanol, theaflavins, lecithin, phytosterols, rice bran oil and D-limonene. So, you see, removing cholesterol problems with fish oil is only one of the nutritional approaches. Those other nutrients are derived from sugar cane, green tea, soy and other plants.

Omega-3 Fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids are the primary nutritional component of fish oils. At one time, supplementation may have been unnecessary. But, our food preferences and the nutritional value of the foods that we eat have changed. Most people simply do not get enough omega-3s in their diet and researchers believe that fact is responsible for increased incidences of heart disease, cancer, stroke, obesity, depression and many other conditions.

When it comes to removing cholesterol problems with fish oil, research has shown that regular daily intake reduces total blood triglycerides and increases HDL levels. It is important to choose a good supplement that is rich in a specific omega-3 known as DHA. DHA has the greatest effect on HDL levels.

Combination Approaches

In this, as it is with most conditions, a combination of approaches works best. Making the dietary and lifestyle changes mentioned above are beneficial to your health in many ways. Improving your nutritional intake can help you live a longer healthier life. Completely removing cholesterol problems with fish oil, alone, may not be possible, but thousands of people around the world have been able to balance their HDL-LDL levels naturally. You could, too.
